Day #3 brought something unexpected ...
Broken cast, anyone?
Our little Destructo Kid proceeded to crush her kneecap. Well, not the real kneecap, but the plaster in the knee area. Dented. Smooshed. Pink fiberglass ripped off, white plaster exposed and crumbling. Unbelievable.
Thankfully we can live with a crushing. It hasn't cracked. If the cast breaks, we have a major problem, for that means the correction cannot be maintained. The minute her foot begins to move, we lose every precious moment of correction. So ... we're praying that the plaster will hold! In the meantime, we taped the knee with lovely black duct tape, trying to hold it in place until our appointment on Friday. Hot pink with a black stripe ... utterly tacky.
But that one low is accompanied by a high -- today was the first day that Grace was OK with the cast. She got around fine, indoors and out. She managed to climb up on some furniture, and climb off her tall chair at the kitchen table onto the floor. She even managed to climb up the steps on the back porch, all smiles when she came into the kitchen.
We leave again for PA on Thursday, staying overnight once again with friends in order to make our appointment for 10:15 a.m. Friday morning. We heard some pretty bad stories about the cast saw, terrorizing the poor little kids. A myriad of suggestions have come our way to ease the situation -- headphones for sensitive little ears, a new toy to keep her distracted, a large book to cover her face so she can't see, sunglasses to keep the plaster and fiberglass dust out of her eyes, a wash cloth to clean off the leg before the second cast is put on.
What a day that will be.
