Small World (and Yummy Food)

Our next door neighbor, "Mr. John," has been our next door neighbor for about 8 years now. We've gotten to know him pretty well over the past year and a half that we've lived here, and he's a great guy to have next door. He's a bachelor, he's a biker (of the Harley variety), he has a long pony tail, he's a Civil War reenactor, he's super nice ... he's one unique guy.

A few weeks ago we were chatting "through the fence" about random things ranging from reenactments, music, the area, and so on. Regarding the segment on music, he mentioned something about a friend of his who lives in PA. Oh ... whereabouts, I asked? He mentioned the road ... our road ... the very same road we lived on while we served at our second church. And not only that, his friend lives only two houses down from our former rectory! It's a fairly rural area, so he never expected us to know of it ... it was just so crazy to have one of those "small world" moments!

We shared a bit of common-talk about the area, Pennsylvania, shared places of interest, and so on. Of course, we got on the topic of cheesesteaks ... of course you must talk about cheesesteaks ... and Don told Mr. John of his favorite eatery in that area, saying "The next time you're down there, you have to give it a try!"

A few minutes ago the doorbell rang. It wasn't Don, because he's working late(r) tonight. Aidan peeked out the window; "Hey, Mommy! It's Mr. John!" Boy, that's strange ... he has never come over before. I answered the door. There stood Mr. John, smiling, holding out a bag.

"What's this?" I asked.

"Two cheesesteaks," he said, still smiling. "And they're still warm." Sure enough -- warm and smelling sooooo good. He had three cheesesteaks (one for himself, of course) and a zucchini bread strapped to the back of his bike the whole way. Apparently they travel quite well.

I love small worlds.
