I just got back from yet another doctor visit, this time with Aidan ... again. Last week's visit to the doctor turned up nothing, and we were told to wait it out. So we did ... and yet now, going on two weeks of nothing, there has been no real improvement. Aidan's throat has been so terribly sore, yet it's not strep. He hasn't been able to eat -- a few bites of a meal at best, before he breaks down in tears, clutching his throat and crying of the pain. He sobbed and sobbed last night, afraid this is how his life was going to be from now on, and that he was going to die from it. My poor boy ...
So what did the doctor turn up today? Nothing. Her suspicion -- laughably so? -- is that it could be mono. Ummm ... come again? Mono?! That "kissing disease" teenagers are warned about? I know it's more than that, of course, but it just sounded so strange! She said viruses can last up to 2 weeks, which is where we are now, but she was concerned that the pain is still strong. It should have lightened up by now. She gave me a lab script for blood work to check for mono ... yeah, I don't think we'll be doing that. There's no cure for it, she said -- she just wants to know if it might be the reason for this lingering illness.
I have a suspicion it might be his allergies acting up -- his "unofficial" allergies, of course, since he has never been formally tested. She prescribed Singulair to see if that might help. Over the past week he's developed his famous "allergy shiners" -- those giant dark rings under his already giant dark eyes, giving him a scarily gaunt appearance. His color hasn't been good, adding to the dungeon-prisoner look. I do hear congestion and think there might be a drip involved. She was skeptical -- an allergy drip doesn't cause that much throat pain, she said.
Mysteries abound in our household, apparently.
