Life is a Zoo

... or so it seems at times! We decided to take our kids to a smallish local zoo yesterday to begin our week-long family vacation. Monday dawned cold and gray, with a looming threat of rain. The thought of spending the entire day in the house was ... well, not my idea of a good start to our vacation! So around mid-morning we decided to risk the impending foul weather and drove to the park. It seems as if God has truly ordained this vacation time for us all -- after experiencing those several strokes of luck (er, um, providence) at the shore, the strokes continued for us at the park. I guess the weather kept the hordes away, for as we drove into the parking lot we noticed that we practically had the place to ourselves. As we walked up to the gate, our first moment of glee occurred: Admission - FREE! You can't beat that! OK, OK, so that moment was tempered by the fact that the little train that chugs around the parameter was closed for maintenance, a great disappointment to us all. No matter -- onward we walked into the park and had a wonderful time:

The rain held off for only so long, but the timing was great as we found some shelter in the covered bridge.
Our shelter continued as we trekked over to the carousel and plopped down $3 for a family ride. This was Grace's first time and she was entranced: "Fun! Fun! Around and around!" I on the other hand am not a fan of circular movements, so I was looking a little green when we got off.

So today's Vacation Agenda is rather bland, since the rain continues to pour. Don and Aidan are heading out to the movie theater soon, while Grace and I take a good rainy-day nap. Tomorrow we're heading back to the beach just for the day, to introduce Grace to the wonders of the ocean. I really hope she doesn't take off after seagulls or anything like that -- the thought of running after a toddler all day doesn't appeal to me. We'll see how it goes. More news and more vacation pics to come!
