Paid yet another visit to the vet this morning -- very reluctantly, I must say, after last week's experience. But when your dog is suffering, there's no other recourse. On Saturday night, Don took him out for his final nighttime pee, and Jack accidentally stumbled coming up the steps. Nothing major, but a stumble can be serious -- and for Jack, it was. Once again he wrenched his back, resulting in inflammation and excruciating pain.
I love our vet, and this one particular doctor specifically. The only opening was late in the afternoon, and I was rather upset, thinking of how Jack would have to suffer through the entire day before being treated. I spent a good chunk of the morning making phone calls -- to the school informing them not to send Aidan home on the bus; to Michelle asking her if she could pick Aidan up from school and let him play at her house for a while. After all the arrangements were made, the vet called back -- the doctor wanted to waste no time in seeing Jack, so could we be there in an hour? More phone calls to undo all the arrangements, jump in the car with Grace and Jack, and head out.
It's the same problem he's been having over the past year or so -- a weakening spine, now prone to "wrenching." There's absolutely nothing we can do for him, other than just take him in for treatment when the next episode occurs. He had been doing so well too, running around like a puppy lately. But one missed step ... that's all it took.
The doctor said this episode was far worse than the other -- he was in horrible pain. He gave Jack a cortisone shot, and now he will be taking steroids plus a narcotic/pain killer. Poor little guy ... I picked him up and gently placed him on his favorite chair, where he's now resting comfortably. The shaking has subsided -- he seems much more comfortable now.
It's only Monday ... right?
